Weekend Reads

Happy weekend! Here are some articles I’ve read over the week that I think you’ll also enjoy. Grab some coffee, your tablet, and get reading.

Non-Tech

  • China is catching to the USA, while Japan is being left behind. China has its eye on the prize, while the US is retreating into a intellectual cave. (Daniel Lemire)
  • The State of Free Speech and Tolerance in America. Good statistics on the effects of political correctness on openness in America. (Cato)
  • Chinese Singles’ Day Eats Cyber Monday for Breakfast. Apparently China likes to shop online 😉 (Statista)
  • Trade school, not 4-year college, is a better bet to solve the US income gap, researchers say. Yes to this a million times. I think college is a waste of time for the vast majority of people. Learning a read trade or skill is such a better route for many people, at a fraction of the cost of a 4 year college. (CNBC)
  • Bootlegging Jane’s Addiction. Jane’s Addition was one of my favorite bands while growing up. Years later, I actually hung out with Perry Farrell. Strange and friendly person indeed. This article brings back a lot of memories of their bootlegged album. (Longreads)

Tech

  • Security Breach and Spilled Secrets Have Shaken the N.S.A. to Its Core. This is extremely concerning. Society is a sitting duck for bad things from bad hombres. (NYTimes)
  • Microsoft says 40 percent of all VMs in Azure now are running Linux. Open source for the win! Plus, Linux is just more pleasing to use than Windows. (ZDNet)
  • Understanding Hinton’s Capsule Networks. Part I: Intuition. The next evolution of neural networks, bred from the godfather himself. Will be interesting to see where this leads. (Medium)
  • Jeff Bezos: Amazon’s Journey to Now And Its Future. “Jeff Bezos is different…species.” – Charlie Munger (Vice Chairman, Berkshire Hathaway). (Ritholz)
  • INSIDE THE FIRST CHURCH OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. At first I thought this was a parody of the Silicon Valley sitcom. Nope. Just SV being SV. (Wired)
